Transfer Student Experience (EAB/Advisory Board Council)

Students selected their current school and enter in the classes they took.

Students see how their credits apply to their selected degree at the school they hope to transfer to.

Desktop view (preferred method for first generation collect students who often attend 2 year colleges and have a hard time transferring). Prospective students can also see degrees that better fit their existing course work.

Prospective students can see how each credit applies to the new degree.

Problem

80% of community college students intend to transfer to a 4-year college, but only 25% are successful. Students often miss key application or financial deadlines that delay or derail their plans. And it's difficult to find out how credits apply to the 4-year college, so students often waste time and money taking courses that don't apply to their bachelor's degree.

Solution

Designed a web application for desktop and mobile to allow students to enter in their course history and see in real-time how it will apply to their degree at the 4-year college.

Application included an interactive checklist to walk them through each step and deadline in order to transfer on time.

Success metrics:

  • 1,500 users after 2 months at 2 colleges

  • 30% of users created accounts

  • 50% of applicants created accounts

  • 5 new colleges signed up for the app

Responsibilities

  • Conducted user interviews to better understand where students were getting hung up in the transfer process

  • Designed a desktop and mobile design for the web app

  • Prototyped the designs

  • User tested and iterated on the designs

  • Collaborated and compromised with product managers and developer to meet the aggressive launch schedule
